Classic Swiss fondue is predominantly made with strong melted cheese and comes from the western Alps. It was primarily traditionally eaten in French-speaking Switzerland and the Italian region of Piedmont. Aside from grated Swiss cheese, the classic fondue comprises garlic, dry white wine, a little corn starch, and salt and pepper. Depending on the fondue recipe, a glug of kirsch may also be added to the cheese mixture.

In addition to the classic cheese fondue, there are lots of other tasty variations of this traditional Swiss favourite. Here you'll find some wonderful ideas for delicious fondue, ranging from entirely vegetarian or vegan fondue recipes to sweet fondue with chocolate and fruit. And not just for Christmas or New Year, but for other celebrations and special occasions, too. You'll also find lots of fondue recipes for any day of the week – such as our delicious fondue tart, which is easy to make in advance and can be enjoyed hot or cold, or our quick and easy fondue mac & cheese that the kids will also love.

Whether with cheese, meat or vegetables, fondue is a popular alternative to Christmas dinner in many homes, and the Swiss classic has also become a firm favourite when celebrating the New Year with friends and family. As a New Year's Eve dish, fondue shortens the waiting time to midnight and also offers a solid basis for a boozy evening.
