When we first saw this trend on TikTok, we were a little sceptical. However, all the videos rave about how tasty they are. We were curious and wanted to try them out for ourselves. And they really are a taste sensation. The possible spice combinations are endless and you can allow your creativity free rein. We decided on a spicy saffron version and found that it goes beautifully with the subtle natural sweetness of Spanish onions. We served them with a crusty baguette. Next time, we'll mix them in with some pasta.

Mix the butter and saffron, brush the onions with the mixture, put the remainder to one side. Sprinkle with the chilli and salt, add the butter, wrap the onions in the foil.

To roast

Approx. 1 hr. in the centre of an oven preheated to 180 °C. Remove, top with the remainder of the saffron butter, sprinkle with the oregano and thyme.
