FOOD ZURICH 2019 kicked off on 16 May. This year, the slogan for Switzerland’s largest and most diverse food festival was “Pairing”. We delighted in a varied selection of pairings, which included surprising flavour combinations, food and drink pairings, and the fusion of food with art and culture. This year, the heart of the festival was on Europaplatz – a prime central location.
Under the slogan “Pairing”, FOOD ZURICH brought together everything that belongs together, including unusual perfect matches, strange combinations and surprising unions. The various chefs, restaurants, towns and countries also harmonized beautifully. There were perfect matches galore.
It wouldn't be FOOD ZURICH without the now legendary opening party in Jelmoli FOOD MARKET. For the fourth time, the opening party marked the start of the 11-day festival. The festival slogan, “Pairing”, set the tone for the opening party and was celebrated on all levels. On behalf of FOOBY, Ivo Adam treated visitors to a “Char Sunrise”. Another highlight of the evening was the cold buffets, where ingredients of the same colour were combined in surprising ways. From gloomy black to bright yellow – the food itself provided a colourful party during the evening. If you’ve never attended the opening party before, you should make it your first resolution for the new year.
This was the first time that the heart of the festival was on Europaplatz, on the south-west side of Zurich main station. The trendy new district is not only in a central, well-connected location, but it is also the ideal meeting place for foodies and anyone looking for a taste of the city. The “KITCHEN”, a platform for culinary enthusiasts with new ideas, cookery courses and the FOOBY Community, was also located here. What’s more, there was also a pub for chefs and caterers who do not have their own restaurant in Zurich (with different crews every day). The Europaallee also hosted the terrace and lounge, grills, bars and a market during the festival.
We celebrated at the traditional closing party again this year. Since we were situated on the Europaallee, we invited everyone to an open-air FOOBY FOOD ZURICH festival. 32 restaurants from Zurich provided the catering, while 50 small producers set up a display, forming a market together with Slow Food Switzerland and the Zurich Nutrition Forum. And our FOOBY Kitchen was at the heart of it all.
Once again, this year's festival gave us 11 days full of culinary delights, and we are still revelling in the sweet memories of all the delicious food. FOOD ZURICH is a highlight for us every year, and we are already looking forward to the food-related surprises in store for us next year.
